This is me. Like me or hate me!

A person’s worth is a social construct in a fragile world with shifting values, but how people see you is self-determined.

People are naturally different. Not just physically, but folks differ aspirationally as well. However, while individuals might embrace themselves as they are, there is always that pull to conform with society’s standards thereby snuffing the life out of diversity. Unfortunately, with this, some people end up wallowing in the misery that low self-esteem imposes on their psyche. How do you perceive yourself, though?

There are three categories of self-esteem: low self-esteem, inflated self-esteem, and high self-esteem. The first two types are problematic. People with low self-esteem tend to readily accept being treated in less-than-ideal manner by others. On the other hand, people with inflated self-esteem tend to be narcissistic in their dealings with others. However, people with high self-esteem tend to feel great about themselves.

The good news is that your sense of self-worth depends on nobody else but yourself. Putting humility aside, there is nothing wrong with seeing yourself through positive lenses. A good personality and a positive mindset will attract the right type of people to you, and a true friend will motivate you to accomplish your goals regarding your life choices.

You should never feel like a loser because of the job you do. Earning an honest day’s living must never be looked down upon. You might be referred to as “dumb” because you are not good in academics. It could be that you learn differently. Therefore, instead of giving up, find what you have a natural aptitude for and adapt a style of learning that works for you. Being bad in mathematics or algebra does not mean you do not have the potential for poetry, art or other academic disciplines.

Dress in nice clothes that complement your physique and worry less about fitting into what everybody else is wearing. Spend less time trying to impress people who care less about you. The bottom line is, do not wallow in self-pity and think less of yourself. Everybody has something that they are good at. Highlight your strengths while working on improving your weak areas. Keep your chin up and do not settle for less. See and treat yourself the way you want others to see and treat you. Afterall, charity begins at home.
